The Rockettes kicked it into gear on the East Coast, claiming our top spot in two categories. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular played a massive 215 shows Nov. 11- Dec. 31 at Radio City Music Hall in New York. More than 1 million spectators witnessed the 'spectacular' show, which ended with a total gross of almost $80 million. There was also a Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Citi Wang Theatre in Boston, where 51 shows brought in nearly $6 million. The Rockettes and company will be out in force again next holiday season.
Musicals dominated the smallest capacity category in the Venues Today Hot Tickets chart. A Christmas Story: The Musical danced out of 24 performances at the Chicago Theatre after being seen by almost 40,000 people. Mamma Mia! brought the music of ABBA to Canada with eight shows at Place des Arts in Montreal, which grossed over $1 million. The North American tour next heads to Palace Theater in Waterbury, Conn., Jan. 20-22.
Something smells Phish-y in New York City. The jam band packed Madison Square Garden for four shows Dec. 28-31. Nearly 75,000 people came to the Live Nation-promoted events, which had a narrow price range of $55.50-$65.50. The group of performances was a stand-alone group of four shows which sold out and marked the group's sixth New Year's Eve at MSG. In 2012, Phish plans to hit the studio and the band's Trey Anastasio will launch his first orchestral tour — featuring both original music and orchestral versions of Phish songs — Feb. 9 at Atlanta Symphony Hall with the Atlanta Symphony.
One unique offering this week is London Prepares: International Gymnastics at The O2 in London. Spectators were invited to watch gymnasts try to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics. More than 42,000 people attended. The event is part of the London Prepares series, which is made up of Olympic-qualifying events all over England, including archery, handball and diving.
